On December 17th, Google’s DeepMind website has opened a new test channel for Project Astra, planning to invite select users to test prototype glasses equipped with AI and AR technology to further collect user feedback and promote the commercial implementation of these glasses.
In terms of system, it is reported that the AR glasses prototype runs on Android XR, a new platform developed by Google for visual computing, primarily suitable for glasses and headset devices, with capabilities such as real-time translation, location memory, and the ability to read text without a smartphone.
In terms of display technology, these AR glasses are equipped with Micro LED screens provided by Raxium. Google acquired Raxium in 2022, which was established in 2017 and is a Micro LED screen supplier based in the United States, but the specific specifications of the screen are currently unknown.
Google has stated that there are no plans to release the AR glasses prototype to consumers at this stage, but in their vision, AR glasses will come in various fashionable and comfortable designs, capable of seamlessly integrating with other Android devices. AR glasses powered by the Android XR system will be able to release Gemini’s features with a simple press, offering functions such as navigation, translation, and message summaries.
