Google Launches Android XR: A New Era of Extended Reality

Thank you to our online friend, South China Wu Yanzu, for the tip! On December 13th, Google announced the launch of a brand new operating system, Android XR. ‘XR’ stands for ‘Extended Reality,’ which encompasses various technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. Android XR can be seen as a ‘strong competitor’ to Apple’s visionOS. Google plans to bring multiple applications into this system.

Officially, users will be able to switch between the virtual and real worlds at any time through head-mounted displays, enjoying a new immersive experience. The release video of Android XR did not reveal too many details, only showing renders of head-mounted devices and examples of ‘conceptual designs.’ According to Google, the XR platform will support applications such as Gemini, Google Maps, Google Photos, Translate, Chrome, and Circle Search, and also provide support for existing Android applications (note: adaptation is required).

The first device to debut is Samsung’s mixed reality head-mounted device, Project Moohan, which is planned to go on sale next year. Developers can now use the Android system designed specifically for XR, but more information about this device has not been disclosed. Google stated that it will leverage ‘years of accumulated experience in AI, AR, and VR technology’ to re-enter the augmented reality market.

Android XR aims to support future head-mounted devices and smart glasses, helping users ‘redefine’ the way they watch, work, and explore. Google previously launched the visual AR platform Google Glass, but it has not been able to break into the consumer market. Its Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 ceased sales and support in 2023.
